The Friends of Pastorius Park celebrated the launch of the Paul W. Meyer Northeast Woods Restoration Project with a ribbon-cutting and tree planting on Thursday. The Paul W. Meyer Northeast Woods Restoration Project is a multi-year restoration project to restore natural habitat, reduce soil erosion, and improve pedestrian circulation in the northeast section of Pastorius Park located in the Chestnut Hill section of Northwest Philadelphia. Joining the celebration were PA State Senator Art Haywood and PA State Representative. Tarik Khan.
According to the Friends of Pastorius Park officials, the Northeast Woods Project will enable a substantial ecological upgrade consistent with the long-term vision for the park by minimizing soil erosion and sediment deposition down gradient, improving pedestrian circulation through the woodlands and tended areas of the park, and delivering meaningful habitat enhancement to support a wider variety of animal, bird and pollinator species.
Chestnut Hill Rotary is one of the many community partners and financial contributors to the project. Rotary members regularly volunteer time to clean and maintain the park and set up/take down of the stage for the popular free summer concert series presented by the Chestnut Hill Community Association.
Earlier this year the Friends of Pastorius Park received a $170,042 reimbursement grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s highly competitive Growing Greener Grant program to support the project.
